The release also sharpened arguments over whether advanced AI should be paused, while outages across several major services exposed the risks of depending on remote compute. OpenAI puts Astra at the centre of the AGI debate
OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, describing it as its strongest model for computer use, software engineering and visual understanding. Greg Brockman went further, saying he believes it meets OpenAI’s definition of artificial general intelligence. The model is initially reaching selected organisations before a broader release through ChatGPT and the API.
The results are notable, but they need context. Astra reportedly scored 99.9 per cent on ARC-AGI-3 with a provider-specific setup that retained hidden reasoning between turns, compared with 62.7 per cent under the benchmark’s neutral harness. A separate demo saw Max Weinbach build an interactive macOS-style web app in 75 minutes. OpenAI has also classified Astra as “Critical” for cybersecurity because of its autonomous hacking skills, adding weight to Sam Altman’s warning that stronger models are already coming.
Washington gets a proposal to ban artificial superintelligence
Bernie Sanders and Greg Casar announced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act, which proposes pausing US AI development and prohibiting systems that match or exceed broad human cognitive performance. The plan includes a cabinet-level oversight agency and criminal penalties of up to 20 years for violations.
The announcement quickly drew criticism from Dwarkesh Patel, whose work was cited in the debate. Patel argued that pausing now could increase long-term danger by allowing compute to accumulate while making later international coordination harder. His position is not against every pause, but against acting without a clear plan for what researchers and governments would accomplish during it.
AI services went down across the board
ChatGPT, Codex, Claude, Grok and Gemini all faced problems during the same period, leaving developers and everyday customers hunting for alternatives. Cursor also reported disruption tied to upstream providers. There is no public evidence that every incident had the same cause, though the overlap made the industry’s dependence on large remote systems hard to ignore.
SpaceXAI later attributed Grok’s outage to its Memphis compute centre and said service had been restored. For developers building products around several AI providers, the episode was a reminder that changing the model name does not always remove the underlying infrastructure risk.
Cybercab removes brake fluid from the equation
Tesla’s Cybercab uses electronic actuators at each brake caliper rather than traditional hydraulic lines and fluid. The compact brake-by-wire design should give the car finer software control and fits Tesla’s new manufacturing approach, while allowing the pads to disengage fully when braking is not required.
The design also raises an obvious question: what happens when electrical components fail? Hydraulic brakes provide a familiar mechanical fallback, so Tesla will need to show how its electrical redundancy, backup supply and fault handling meet production safety standards.
Tesla’s Robotaxi app helps riders find the right Cybercab
When a Cybercab arrives, the Robotaxi app changes colour to match the car’s RGB front light bar and displays an arrow pointing towards it. Riders can also flash the lights or sound the horn, alongside seeing the vehicle’s distance and registration details.
It is a small product detail, but an important one for autonomous fleets. Finding the correct car in a crowded pick-up area can be awkward even with a human driver available to help. Tesla’s approach gives the vehicle and phone a shared visual identity without adding another interaction step.
Chamath marks 50 with advice for his children
Chamath Palihapitiya used his 50th birthday to write a public letter to his children. He traced his path from Sri Lanka during the approach to civil war, through his family’s move to Canada, childhood poverty and early work at Burger King, before building a career in the United States.
